They can feel the physical sensation of pain clearly, but the distress usually attached to pain is significantly reduced. Because they aren’t as swayed by intense negative emotions, they tend to make more rational, less impulsive decisions. They often experience states where they don’t feel like a separate observer looking at the world, but rather a part of an integrated experience. The brain network responsible for “mind-wandering” and self-centered thinking (the “me” center) shows altered activity, leading to these non-ordinary states of consciousness.

A study of long-term practitioners of advanced Theravada Buddhist meditation found that the thinking and sensing parts of the brain become more integrated, and the brain functions more as a unified network. It moves the brain away from a rigid, top-down control system and toward a more fluid, integrated way of processing reality. This helps explain why advanced meditators often report feelings of “oneness” or a sense of being fully present without effort.
Advanced Meditation Alters Resting-State Brain Network
This research looked at the effects of Samyama, a yoga meditation practice. It found improved efficiency and cross talk within the brain. Two divergent brain networks became more connected and better at balancing internal thoughts with external reality. People who showed the most increased connectivity within their brain networks also reported the biggest improvements in their daily mindfulness levels.

This study found that during deep Jhana meditation, the brain moves closer to a state of perfect balance between rigidity and chaos. It becomes more integrated, complex and diverse, but less noisy. In this unique state the meditators are “tuned out” from distractions but “tuned in” and ready to respond if something important happens. This suggests that meditators can actually direct their brain biology toward a higher level of functioning just by using their attention.
Arousal vs. relaxation: a comparison
This study compared two major Buddhist meditation traditions and found they have opposite effects. Vipassana meditation triggered the parasympathetic nervous system resulting in lower heart rate and a calm physical state. What About Enlightenment and Higher Consciousness?
Does the science prove that?
The short answer is: it depends on what you mean.
Science doesn’t define “enlightenment” as a single, quantifiable endpoint. There’s no switch in the brain labeled “enlightenment on/off.” Instead, researchers describe neural correlates of altered states (like changes in network connectivity, oscillatory patterns, and information integration) and trait differences (like baseline attention, emotional regulation, and self-referential processing).
Advanced meditators do show distinctive neural signatures. Studies using high-resolution imaging or complex signal analysis reveal that deep absorptive states are neurophysiologically different from ordinary wakeful rest. But interpreting these differences as “higher consciousness” remains a theoretical choice rather than a scientific conclusion—because consciousness itself is an open topic in neuroscience.
And that’s good for us. We don’t have to pin down a metaphysical destination to reap benefits along the way.
